Tips for Stopping an Overflowing Toilet

Wednesday, March 25th, 2020

An overflowing toilet is a plumbing emergency that everybody dreads. Well, maybe not your trusty, neighborhood plumber. They’re used to dealing with these problems. Everyone else usually goes into panic mode when a toilet starts to overflow after being flushed.

At Inglewood Pronto Plumbers, it’s our job to tell you there’s no need to panic. Stopping an overflowing toilet right away isn’t hard and doing so eases potential damage while you wait for a plumber to get to your home to make repairs. Take a moment and keep reading to learn the steps you need to take to handle this aggravating, but a fixable, situation.

Steps to Take with an Overflowing Toilet

The first thing you want to do is to locate that valve on the feed line. This is the plastic piping that attaches to the wall behind the toilet and connects to the tank. Every time the toilet fills up with fresh water it comes from this line.  Turn the valve counterclockwise and shut off the flow of water. In most cases, this works beautifully.

My Toilet Doesn’t Have a Valve on the Feed Line!

Don’t panic. This happens to older toilets. It’s still possible to stop the water. Here’s what you need to do. You need to remove the lid to the tank. Do this carefully so the lid doesn’t slip out of your hands and break. You don’t need that added expense. Now, once the lid is removed and safely out of the way, locate the chain in the tank. Pull up on it and put something under it to keep it up. This stops the water flow and protects your bathroom from additional water damage while you wait for help to arrive.

Clean Up the Water

At this point, you’ll want to clean up the mess using towels or newspapers. There are a couple of reasons for cleaning up before a plumber gets to your house. First, you don’t want bacteria to get into the flooring. You also don’t want it to spread and cleaning up prevents additional water damage.

Should I Plunge?

If you think you have a simple clog, go ahead and try plunging. It might get rid of the problem and you’re good to go.  However, when plunging doesn’t do the trick, give your 24-hour licensed plumbers in Inglewood a call.

3 Ways to Block a Bathtub Drain Without a Tub Stopper

Sunday, March 1st, 2020

All you want after a long day is to take a hot bath, but you haven’t been able to do this for a while because you’re missing a tub stopper. Well, you stumbled upon this post, and you’re in luck. We have a few suggestions for blocking a bathtub drain using simple household fixes. Until you can get a new bathtub stopper, check out these hacks for plugging up your bathtub.

Use an Empty Coffee Pod

Do you have a Keurig or another coffee maker that uses plastic coffee pods? Or, do you have a 15 ml medicine cup handy? Both of these work great for plugging up the drain. Start by putting the pod or cup in the drain bottom first. Then, begin filling the tub to see if it will hold water. Sometimes the pod or cup can be a little too small. If this is the case, wrap a couple thick rubber bands around the pod or cup to create a tighter seal.

Use a Plastic Lid

If you don’t have coffee pods handy, find a plastic lid large enough to cover the drain hole. A jam jar lid works well too. Put the lid over the hole so that it’s lying flat. Sometimes, you need to create a stronger seal to prevent the lid from floating in the water. Do this by dampening the bottom of the lid. Then, as you start to fill the bathtub, press firmly on the lid. As the tub fills, the water’s weight should keep it in place.

Use a Plastic Bag

Another option is to place a small sponge or washcloth in a plastic bag. You need to twist the sponge wash cloth tight so that it fits nicely into the drain. Stuff the bag into the drain after you’ve squeezed out all the air from the bag. Use a rubber band to keep the bag closed or zip it shut if you’re using a zip bag. If you don’t want to go to all this trouble, you can also fill a zip bag with water and sit it over the drain.

What You Need to Know about Septic to Sewer Conversion

Monday, February 3rd, 2020

Homeowners in Los Angeles County communities with existing septic systems may have the option to connect to their city’s main sewer connection.

While there are still many homes in the area that operate on a septic system for waste removal, this antiquated system may be more of a hassle than a convenience for many Inglewood homeowners. In cases like these, septic-to-sewer conversion may be a good option.

Reasons to Consider Septic to Sewer Conversion

There are several reasons that homeowners in Inglewood, CA, should consider upgrading their waste removal system.

Property protection: When septic tanks fail, they leave behind a mess that is the property owner’s sole responsibility. Not only are you responsible for fixing the problem, but you’ll also foot the bill for any water damage left behind.

Fewer maintenance costs: Septic tanks need to be pumped once every 3-5 years to keep the system running. Professional septic tank pumping keeps this system in good working order, but it is an added expense.

Avoid repair and replacement costs: Homeowners who need to replace their septic tank are looking at an expensive plumbing service. The average cost to replace a septic tank is $1200 – $3000. This amount does not include the additional cost of purchasing the stone or gravel to set the tank.

City Ordinances May Require Homeowners to Convert

Over the past several years, cities such as Malibu, Old Topanga, and communities throughout the San Fernando Valley have all gone nose-to-nose with local government bodies over septic tank requirements. Many of the ordinance changes suggested left homeowners feeling the financial sting of sticking with their existing septic connections due to the upkeep requirements.

Why are municipalities getting involved in the septic-to-sewer conversion debate?

Cities are attempting to change their municipal regulations regarding septic tanks in an effort to streamline the waste removal process and to reduce the environmental impact of septic tanks. Data collected from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows that 10%-20% of septic systems fail every year. Whether these systems are inland or near coastal waters, the environmental impact can be detrimental to soil and wildlife.

Keeping the Neighbors Happy

Another reason homeowners may want to consider a septic-to-sewer conversion is to keep the peace with their neighbors. Septic tanks can smell for many reasons including the following:

  • Dry drains
  • Clogged pipes
  • Faulty pumps
  • Blocked venting systems

The most common reason for odors is a tank that is too full. Regardless of the reason, if a home has a smelly septic tank, upset neighbors are usually just around the corner. Homeowners who want to keep the peace and clear the air may want to consider the benefits of connecting to the city’s main sewer line.

Sewer line repair in Inglewood, CA by best local and licensed plumbers near you.Because the main sewer line is buried in the yard of your home it can be hard to diagnose a broken sewer pipe. However, there are signs that homeowners can keep an eye out for to detect early problems and call for sewer line repair.

Frequently Clogged Drains

It’s expected for a household drain to clog every now and then. Toilets, showers, kitchen sinks, and bathtubs can experience clogs every now and then. It’s when clogs begin to pop up more often and in multiple drains, that you may have cause to worry. These are signs – along with slow-flowing drains – that you may have a blocked sewer line.

Bad Odors

Sewer line problems aren’t always visible. More often than not, you can smell it, though. Sewer gases can back up into drains fairly quickly and emit a bad odor. Many times, homeowners don’t notice the smell in their homes right away, but in their yards. Sewer gases can be deadly, so don’t wait to call a 24 hour plumber in Ingelwood, CA.

Wet Spots in Your Yard

Sewer leaks can be hard to detect. Pipes collapse or break for many reasons including tree roots that have grown into the pipe. Regardless of what has caused the pipe to fail, one of the earliest indications of a break are soft spots in the yard. Every so often, homeowners should walk their yard near the sewer line and look for soggy spots. If you find one, call a plumber. You may need sewer pipe replacement or repair.
